Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Climbing or trailing perennial herbs from rhizomes.

Stems: Stems up to 20(–30) dm long, glabrous and somewhat glaucous, conspicuously 2–winged.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. The rachis ending in a well–developed tendril, leaflets 2, opposite, lanceolate, elliptic to broadly elliptic or oblong, somewhat glaucous, usually 4–9(–15) cm long, 1–5 cm wide. Base semihastate. Petioles 2–winged. Stipules lanceolate to ovate, (1–)3–5(–8) cm long, persistent.

Flowers: Flowers 5–15 in racemes, peduncles ca. 12–14 cm long. Flowers papilionaceous; pedicels 1–2.5 cm long. Calyx 5-lobed, ca. 10–12 mm long, the teeth unequal, upper ones 3–3.5 mm long, lateral ones 4.5–5.5 mm long, the lowest one 6.5–7.5 mm long. Corolla pale pink, purplish pink, purple, or red, standard (15–)20–30 mm long. Stamens 10; upper stamen connate at least at the middle to the other 9, which are connate into a tube. Ovary superior; style 1, apical, pubescent on upper (adaxial) side ca. ½ its length.

Fruit: Pods linear–oblong; 6–1 cm long; 0.6–1 cm wide; dehiscent. Seeds 10–15; rugose–reticulate; with a thin aril.

Ploidy: 2n = 14

Habitat:
